The Drowning of Haweswater
Few visitors realise that many Lakes have been enlarged and dammed and are in fact reservoirs in disguise. Thirlmere and Windermere are arguably the most well-known but Haweswater, which supplies Manchester, is often overlooked and even missed off maps. Mining historian Ian Tyler discusses the drowning under 100 feet of water of one of the Lake District’s most remote and hidden valleys, including the entire village of Mardale, and asks at what cost this sacrifice was made?
